Add a Mac to Apple Business Manager without erasing (2026): what works

A set-up Mac must be erased before Apple Configurator adds it to Apple Business Manager. What works without a wipe: reseller purchases and the macOS 26 MDM move.

Key takeaways

  • A Mac that is already set up must be erased before Apple Configurator can add it.
  • Bought through Apple or a linked reseller: the Mac appears in Apple Business with no erase.
  • Already in Apple Business on macOS 26: move it to a new MDM with a deadline and no wipe.
  • Manually added Macs have a 30-day provisional period in which the user can release them.
  • Out of Apple Business: profile enrolment works without erasing, but the Mac is not supervised.

You cannot add a Mac that is already set up to Apple Business Manager without erasing it. Apple's own guide says you need to "first erase all content and settings" before adding a configured Mac with Apple Configurator. What macOS 26 does allow is moving a Mac that is already in Apple Business Manager from one MDM to another without erasing it.

Caspian publishes this guide and sells a product in this space: Caspian, the IT automation platform for scale-ups. Apple renamed Apple Business Manager to Apple Business in 2026; this page uses both names. Facts were checked on Apple's support site on 4 November 2026.

Can you add a Mac to Apple Business Manager without erasing?

Not with Apple Configurator. Apple's guide to adding devices says: "You can add a new Mac or you can add a Mac that has already been set up. Before you can add a Mac that's already been set up, you need to first erase all content and settings" (Apple Support, Add devices using Apple Configurator to Apple Business, dated 14 April 2026).

There are three routes that avoid erasing, each with a limit:

  1. The Mac came from Apple or a participating reseller. If the purchaser used your Apple Customer Number, or the reseller linked the Mac to its Reseller Number, the Mac appears in Apple Business on its own (Apple Support, Requirements for Apple Business, dated 10 September 2026). Add the reseller under Manage device suppliers.
  2. The Mac is already in Apple Business and runs macOS 26. You can move it to a new MDM with a deadline and no wipe (see below).
  3. The Mac stays out of Apple Business. It can still enrol in an MDM by profile, without erasing. The Mac is then not supervised, and the user can remove the profile.

How do you add a new Mac with Apple Configurator for iPhone?

This is the route for a Mac that was not bought through Apple or a linked reseller. Requirements from Apple: an iPhone with iOS 16 or later, a Mac with Apple silicon or the T2 chip, and macOS 12.0.1 or later (Apple Support, 14 April 2026).

  1. Install Apple Configurator on the iPhone and sign in with a Managed Apple Account that can manage devices.
  2. In Apple Configurator settings, pick the network method (share the iPhone's Wi-Fi is the default) and the MDM assignment: None, Default or a specific service.
  3. Plug the Mac into power. Start it, choose the language, and stop at the "Select Your Country or Region" pane. If you go past it, restart the Mac.
  4. Hold the iPhone near the Mac and scan the image in Setup Assistant, or click Pair Manually and type the six-digit code.
  5. Wait for the upload, then click Shut Down.
  6. If you chose None, assign the Mac to an MDM in Apple Business. It appears in a group named Apple Configurator.

For a Mac that is already in use, Apple adds one step before step 3: System Settings, General, Transfer or Reset, Erase All Content and Settings. Back up first.

Can you add a MacBook to Apple Business Manager without an iPhone?

Apple lists two tools for manual adds: Apple Configurator for iPhone and Apple Configurator for Mac (Apple Support, 14 April 2026). Without an iPhone, the Mac version on a second Mac does the job over a USB-C cable. Both routes start at Setup Assistant, so both need a new or erased Mac.

The other route without an iPhone is the purchase itself. Buy through Apple with your Customer Number, or through a reseller that links devices to your organisation, and the Mac arrives in Apple Business before it is opened. For a company that buys a few Macs a month, this route saves the most time: the IT admin never touches the Mac, and the new hire unboxes it at home.

A manually added Mac has a 30-day provisional period after it is assigned and enrolled. During those 30 days the user can release it from Apple Business, supervision and the MDM. Plan the hand-over so the 30 days have passed before the Mac matters.

Can you move Macs between MDMs without erasing (macOS 26)?

Since macOS 26, iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, Apple Business can move a device from one MDM to another without a wipe. In Apple Business, select the devices, choose Assign Device Management, pick the new service and add a deadline (Apple Support, Migrate managed devices to another device management service, dated 17 September 2026).

Apple's requirements: the Mac runs macOS 26 or later, your organisation owns it and enrolled it with Automated Device Enrollment, and a Mac added with Apple Configurator is past its 30-day provisional period. Apple adds that "a Mac with macOS 26 or later supports migration that unenrolls from an Automated Device Enrollment and reenrolls with profile-based enrollment."

Before the deadline, the user sees a notice and can start the move from System Settings. At the deadline, the Mac shows a full-screen prompt that cannot be dismissed. If FileVault is on, the new MDM can escrow a new recovery key using the bootstrap token. Set up the new MDM's profiles and apps first, so the Mac lands in a working state.

Is Apple Business Manager a free MDM?

Apple Business itself has no fee. Apple's guide refers to "the built-in device management service in Apple Business" next to external services that link to it (Apple Support, 14 April 2026). Check what the built-in service covers before you drop a paid MDM: settings and app delivery for Mac apps that are not in the App Store need a tool that packages them.

The manual work that remains is everything after enrolment: installing the role's apps, creating the accounts, and keeping the list of Macs matched to people. Caspian works next to Apple Business and next to your MDM if you keep one. It installs apps on the laptop, creates the account in each app, and adds the person to the right channels and groups. It costs €10 per active user per month, excluding VAT, with all of that person's laptops included. Start for free.

What does Caspian read, and with which rights?

Caspian reads metadata and settings, not content. It reads which apps exist, who has an account, which role that account has, and the state of each laptop. It does not read file contents, email bodies or chat messages. Connections are read-only by default; Caspian asks for write rights only for the steps you switch on, such as removing a leaver's account. Customer data is stored with AWS in the EU (Frankfurt). An independent pen test is planned, and ISO 27001 and SOC 2 are in progress.

FAQ

Can I add a used Mac to Apple Business Manager without wiping it?

No. Apple requires you to erase all content and settings before adding a Mac that was already set up. The no-wipe options are a linked purchase or the macOS 26 move between MDMs.

Do I need an iPhone to add a Mac to Apple Business Manager?

No. Apple Configurator for Mac on a second Mac also works. Macs bought through Apple or a linked reseller appear in Apple Business without either tool.

Can I move Macs from one MDM to another without erasing?

Yes, from macOS 26. Assign the Macs to the new MDM in Apple Business and set a deadline. The Mac needs Automated Device Enrollment and must be past any 30-day provisional period.

What is the 30-day provisional period?

A Mac added with Apple Configurator can be released from Apple Business by its user for 30 days after it is assigned and enrolled.

Is Apple Business Manager free?

Apple Business has no fee and includes a built-in device management service. Third-party MDMs and app tools that link to it charge their own prices.
